South East Senior Baseball League (SESBL) action continued last week with another handful of games taking place both locally and outside of town.
Last Tuesday night, the Yorkton SESBL Cardinals took it on the chin against the Willowbrook Royals, falling 8-4 on home field. In other action in Langenburg, the Indians pasted the Melville Bison to a tune of 10-1.
Last Wednesday, the Yorkton Yankees won a close one over the Willowbrook Royals.
The score went back and forth all game long until the Yankees prevailed with a 5-4 victory to maintain their status as the league's undisputed number-one team.
The score was tied 1-1 after the first inning. The Yankees took a 3-1 lead after two innings. Willowbrook closed the gap to 3-2 after the third inning and it held until the fifth when the Royals tied it at 3-3.
The Yankees would tally once more in each of the final two innings to hang on for the win.
Five Yankee players had at least one hit.
Avery Hotomani had a hit and a run, Luke Boechler had two hits, Justin Stupak had one hit and a pair of runs, Derek Kohut had a hit and a strikeout, Mackenzie Unyi had one of each and Logan Calanchie went the full seven innings, facing 26 Royal batters, struck out 10, gave up four runs and walked one.
According to ballcharts.com, it was his first complete game of the season.
Other action from across the league, things got a little worse for the Yorkton Cardinals, who played the Parkland Padres on home field last Thursday night, falling by a 5-3 count, says head coach Cliff Leschyshyn, who added that he was missing a lot of players.
The league beatings continued that night with the Indians delivering another beating, this time to the Swan River Reds, 20-5 in Langenburg.
On Friday heading into the long weekend, Swan River got into the win column, beating Parkland 13-6 while Willowbrook hung in for their second win in as many tries, getting past the Tribe, 8-6.
The lone matchup that was scheduled for Saturday saw the Indians travel to Pirie Field in Melville to play the Bison.
Heading into the rest of the holiday, Langenburg and Canora were scheduled to play at Al Sapieha Field in Canora weather permitting while the Royals were aiming for yet another 'w' when they play against the Yorkton Orioles.
Yesterday's (Tuesday) action has the Yorkton Yankees heading to Willowbrook for a rematch of last week's 5-4 Yankee win at home and the Supers and Bison get together at Melville's Pirie Field.
Tonight's (Wednesday) lone contest has the Yorkton Cardinals and the Supers in Canora. Game time is slated for a 6:15 p.m., opening pitch.
Heading into the Monday to Friday work week, the Yankees continue to dominate, leading the SESBL standings by a commanding five points. Eleven wins, 0 losses and a tie give the Yankees a lead up on Willowbrook who sits second with 18 points and a league record of 9-2.
The Canora Supers are in third place by one point over the Langenburg Indians who have 10 points. Langenburg sits at 5-6, and the Supers at 5-5.
The Yorkton Cardinals slip to 4-6-1 with Thursday's loss to the Padres and the Bison are next at 4-5 for eight points in the standings.
Swan River, the Yorkton Orioles and Padres round out the standings at four, three and two points respectively.
