The Canora Cougars senior girls volleyball team is in a developmental year, but gained enough experience early enough in the season to place in the middle of the pack at a home tournament, said Coach Colin Knight.

In the home tournament on October 2-3, the Cougars started strong, winning against Preeceville, but lost to Creighton in the second. The Cougars then defeated Stobart B in the third game.

During the quarter finals, the Cougars beat Stobart A. In the semi-finals, Canora beat Norquay which resulted in Canora playing Kamsack in the bronze medal match, which Kamsack took in two sets.

“We almost beat them during the second set, but they came back to win 26-24,” said Knight. The 2015 season is progressing much as expected, Knight said.

“It is almost an entirely new team, comprised of eight Grade 10 students, one Grade 11 student, and two Grade 12 students,” he said. “The team is lucky to have the seasoned experience and leadership of Mina Mykytyshyn and Shaelynn Bazarski.”

Though the season is still young, the Cougars were privileged to have taken part in the Luther College High School tournament in Regina where the girls were exposed to some very high calibre volleyball, said Knight. “This experience helped the team grow and I believe it resulted in a fourth place finish out of eight teams at our home tournament.”

Canora will be hosting Conferences on November 7. The other teams in attendance will be Foam Lake, Wynyard, Kelvington, and Wadena.
