Jessica Lutz of Yorkdale Central Public School got back to her winning ways at the big track meet. She cleaned up at the GSSD meet a couple weeks ago.

On Wednesday and Thursday of last week, she placed second in the midget girls 100-m dash, Bryce Sherring finished in third. Lutz also placed in the top three in the midget girls 200-m dash, coming in first. She collected her second gold medal with another first place in the midget girls 1500-m dash with a time of 5:51:67.

In the girls 4x100-m relay midget division, the Yorkton Regional Secondary (YRHS) earned a silver medal.

In midget girls shot put, Bailey Pelchat of Yorkton Regional Secondary (YRHS) scored 6.95-m for third place.

Two more YRHS athletes placed 1-2 in the junior girls 100-m and 200-m dash. Breanna Melnechenko and Rachel Machnee placed 1-2. The current record holder in the 200-m was a YRHS student who has held the record since 1981.

Melnechenko added her third gold medal in the junior girls 400-m dash, beating Melville by nearly 10 seconds.

The junior girls 800-m relay winner was Rita Fetsch of Yorkton Catholic (SHHS). Fetsch was not done there either. She added first place finishes in the 1500-m, the 3000-m and the 80-m hurdles. In the hurdles, she knocked off teammate Allison Kruger and Melnechenko of Yorkton Regional Secondary (YRHS).

Machnee won two more medals in the junior girls long jump and third place in the junior girls javelin throw.

In the senior girls 100-m dash, Rebecca Neal (Yorkton Regional Secondary) and Jenna Sahulka (Yorkton Catholic) finished 2-3.

Brooke Mentanko (Yorkton Catholic) was among the multi-medal winners during the two day event. The Gr. 12 student who just celebrated her graduation came up golden in the senior girls 400-m dash, girls 800-m dash, girls 1500-m dash and the 3000-m.

Each race was dominated by Yorkton Catholic and Yorkton Regional Secondary. Brandey Blahut, Braunty Pelchat, Emily Kruger all came up in second or third in their respective races.

Jenna Sahulka (Yorkton Catholic) won over Emily Kruger (Yorkton Catholic) in the senior girls 80-m hurdle.

Alex Appel and Chloe Mrozowich (both Yorkton Catholic) finished in first and second place in the senior girls high jump.

Jodi Onda-Inglis (Yorkton Regional Secondary) placed in third in the senior girls long jump.

Kathryn Lohnes (Yorkton Catholic) was the lone local finalist in the bantam girls 100-m dash.

Jessica Lewthwaite (Yorkton Urban Middle) was the lone local finisher in the bantam 400-m dash; she won gold.

Roma Zulyniak and Kellie Onda-Inglis (Yorkton Rural Middle) placed in first and second respectively while Jessica Lewthwaite placed in third in the bantam girls 800-m run.

Onda-Inglis also picked up a second and third place finish in the 1500-m and the 3000-m runs.

Yorkton Rural Middle won silver medals in the girls 4x100-m relay bantam and Yorkton Urban Middle won bronze medals.

Abby Schmalz placed in third in the bantam girls long jump. Linda Toth and Dakotah Cmoc placed first and second in the bantam girls shot put.

Toth also won gold medal in the bantam discus throw event. Mikaila Ortynsky also did well with a silver medal finish.

Dayenera Ewen of Yorkton Rural Middle placed third in the pee wee 100-m dash. She also placed in first in the 200-m dash.

Sean Thompson and Kayla Schmidt also finished high, with silver and bronze medals respectively.

Kelsey Haczekewicz (Yorkton Urban Middle) placed third in the 400-m dash.

Justine Zarowny, Jennifer Haczkewicz and Alexandria Flaman finished 1-2-3 in the pee wee girls 800-m run.

Zarowny also placed first in the pee wee 1500-m run.


Kelsey Haczkewicz and Sierra Cook were 2-3 in the 3000-m run.

Sarah Sutter and Emma Teneycke were 2-3 winners in the pee wee girls high jump.

Deyenera Ewen added another medal to her collection when she topped Potashville's entries to win the girls long jump event, and another gold medal in the triple jump.

Erica Ford won a bronze medal in the shot put event.

Cheyenne Weston (Yorkton Rural Middle) won a bronze medal in this year's track and field championships.

The two Yorkton high schools went head-to-head in several events. One of them was the boys 4x400-metre relay. Yorkton Regional Secondary finished with a time of 4:00:55 over Yorkton Catholic whose time was 4:10:50.

Brendan Weber and Caleb Sutter won silver medals and bronze medals in the midget boys 200-m dash.

Weber added a bronze medal in the 200-m dash.

Jaden Porte (Yorkton Regional Secondary) had a hat trick of gold medals last week. He won his first of three in the 800-m midget boys' race, a second gold in the 1500-m over teammate Haylen Langelier, and a third gold in the 3000-m run; Langelier placed in third in the 3000-m.

The Yorkton Regional Secondary entry in the boys 4x100-m midget relay was good enough for bronze medals. Potashville Secondary and Melville Secondary won first and second place.

Jaden Porte collected his fourth medal of the track and field championships, a silver medal in the midget boys long jump.

Peter Kozushka and teammate Tanner Mak won silver and bronze medals respectively in the midget boys shot put. Both represent the Yorkton Regional Secondary. Kozushka also won gold in discus throw.

Caleb Sutter of Yorkton Catholic won silver in the javelin throw.

Logan Wiley of Yorkton Regional Secondary won a bronze medal in the junior boys 100-m dash and another bronze in the 200-m dash.

Matthew Srochenski won a silver for the Yorkton Regional Secondary in the 1500-m junior boys run.

Brayden Oystrick of Yorkton Regional Secondary won gold medals in the junior boys long jump and the triple jump. Teammate Graham Campbell finished third in both events.

Preston Liebrecht of the Yorkton Catholic Secondary had his highlights of the track and field championships, winning four medals and setting two records. "Preston is the most gifted athlete I have seen at Sacred Heart in my 18 years of coaching," states Yorkton Catholic Secondary distance runners coach Rachel Sterzuk.

Liebrecht's good fortunes started in the senior boys 100-m dash. It was also his first of two records broken over the two day track meet. The previous record had stood since 1995 when Tim Sebulski of Foam Lake achieved the feat.

Liebrecht did not waste any time setting record number 2.

"His athletic prowess is really remarkable," observed coach Sterzuk.

Liebrecht shredded the record in the senior boys 200-m dash with a time of 22.13. The previous record was set by Cale Brown of Yorkton Regional Secondary in 2010.

Daniel Mandziuk of Yorkton Regional Secondary, placed in second in both events Liebrecht set records in.

Mandziuk won gold over teammate Matthijs Wenning in the senior boys 400-m and Wenning won the gold medal over fellow Yorkton Regional competitor Brandon Campbell in the 800-m run.

Wenning also edged Campbell to win gold medal in the 1500-m run, and did it again over Campbell in the 3000-m run.

Liebrecht returned to the gold-medal spotlight in the senior boys high jump and the long jump. In the long jump, he won over Tyler Boychuk (Yorkton Regional Secondary).

Boychuk would take a gold medal in the senior boys triple jump over John Odgers of Potashville.

Nathan Guy (Yorkton Catholic) won a bronze medal in the senior boys shot put and teammate Robert Okeny captured a silver medal in the senior boys javelin throw.

In the bantam division, Hunter Arnold of Yorkton Catholic-Ecole St. Michael's, won a bronze medal in the 100-m dash.

Cole Burkholder won a gold medal in the 200-m dash and a silver in the 800-m. Devon Frounfelter of Yorkton Rural Middle won a bronze medal in the 200-m. Burkholder also took a gold in the 1500-m run.

Arnold won a bronze medal in the 400-m dash bantam and Kylan Shea won the gold medal.

TJ McBride won a silver medal in the 1500-m and a gold medal in the 3000-m run. Austin Olson won a silver medal in the 3000-m run as well
