Eighth annual Snow Slam this weekend

The Yorkton Martial Arts Training Centre will be holding their 8th Annual Abominable Snow Slam martial arts challenge this weekend at Dr. Brass School in Yorkton.

Gold, silver, bronze and fourth place medals will be awarded in all events except power breaking, says Mike Forster, chief instructor at the YMATC.

There will be awards for club participation, awarded to the visiting club with the highest number of registered participants.

Other awards will include: power brick breaking (for both men and women), and an overall grand champion trophy for both men and women (black belt-men, junior colour belt-women).

Registration for the Snow Slam will begin on Friday March 2 with two sessions.

On site registration will be held from 4-7 p.m (19 Darlington St. W). A second registration will follow at the YMATC from 7-9 p.m.

Forster said they are also offering a 'last minute' registration on the event date (March 3) from 8-9:30 a.m.)

Opening ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., with a Lion Dance and Ice Break.

Black Belt Empty Hands Forms and weapon forms start at 10 a.m. Empty hands forms (starting with the youngest and lowest ranks) starts at 11 a.m., including adult ranks.

At 11:30 a.m., it's light kickboxing. At 12:15 p.m., it's black belt light kickboxing, at 12:45 p.m., it's black belt point sparring and weapon sparring, followed by team sparring at 1:45 p.m. Black belt power breaking at 2:15 p.m., and the black belt grand champion presentations from 2:45-3 p.m. Finally, the point and weapon sparring, beginning with the youngest and lowest ranks goes from 3 p.m.
