Saskatchewan productReid Flasch hopes to settle into a middle infield position with the Yorkton Cardinals of the Western Major Baseball League this season.

"I am playing at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. I was injured for the first half of our season but have been playing for the last month or so," said the Saskatoon-born Flasch who was raised in Lloydminister playing his minor baseball there. "I feel 100 per cent now.

Flasch said the Thompson Rivers team has improved as the season has progressed this spring.

"Our team started out slow but we are playing really well right now heading into the final two weekends of play. Our CCBC National Championships are being held in Kamloops from May 10-13 so we're all excited for that weekend," he recently told Yorkton This Week. Flasch said he sees his role as a catalyst offensively.

"My job is to get on base and let others drive me in," he said, adding he sees himself as a "contact hitter who steals bases."

In the field Flasch said "I take pride in being a good defender whether it's at shortstop or second base." Joining the Cardinals this season was an easy decision for Flasch, who said he knows the city already.

"I'm very familiar with Yorkton as I've played there several times throughout my minor ball career," he said. "It's a placewhere I enjoy playing so I'm glad I'm getting the chance.

Flasch said he sees a summer in the WMBL as a way to refine his skills on the diamond.

"Having the chance to play at a high level every day is great," he said. "When you are around this kind of pitching all summer long and defending against lineupswho can hit the ball well all the way down the lineup makes youa better player.

"Continuing to have a good approach at the plate and being consistent in all facets in my game are my biggest goals."

The Cardinal season begins Fridaywith their season opener in Melville June 1, and home opener at Jubilee Park against Regina June 2.
