Fourteen four-person teams are signed-up with the Kamsack Curling Club and enjoy curling at the Broda Sportsplex each Thursday night.

“That’s two rinks fewer than we had last year, but some of those 14 rinks are new to the club,” said Kevin Chutskoff, president of the Kamsack Curling Club.

“We curl at 7 p.m. and at 9 p.m.,” he said. “Our wind-up bonspiel will be played March 31, April 1 and 2.”

The club was to host a special players’ clinic yesterday (January 27) for beginners and for seasoned curlers.

Sponsored by Affinity Credit Union, the clinic was part of CurlSask’s program entitled Affinity Credit Union Curling in Your Community, said Amber Holland, executive director of CurlSask.

“Wayne Kiel, the provincial high performance coach, who has many years experience in coaching curling, was the instructor for the Kamsack clinic,” Holland said. Gerald Shymko of Calder, a past Brier competitor, helped as the clinic’s “celebrity coach.”

The clinic was basically aimed at getting people out, playing the sport, Holland said. “It aimed to help make people better curlers and to provide the opportunity for new curlers to get started with good instruction, covering the basics including how to deliver a stone and brushing.

“The clinic was a good opportunity for people to experience the sport,” she said. “Anyone at any age can curl. You don’t have to be the best, but you can come out and have fun.”

The clinic was to last about two hours, Chutskoff said. Following the instruction, pizza and refreshments were served.

Working on the club’s executive committee with Chutskoff are Andy Kazakoff, the vice-president; Kim Petruk, the treasurer, and Kim Chutskoff, secretary.
