The seniors curling bonspiel held in Canora provided enjoyment for seniors around the Canora area.

A total of 16 teams participated in the bonspiel, which was held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre from January 16 to 19. Teams were not only from Canora, but from Preeceville, Sturgis, Norquay, Kamsack, Saltcoats, Yorkton and Buchanan.

Each game was determined through a random draw, and teams played five games each, earning points for ends and for winning a game.

The winning team was the Ross Tressel rink of the Yorkton-Buchanan area with 52 points. Tied for second were the Ivan Stevenson rink of Sturgis and the Elden Conrad rink of Saltcoats, each with 50 points.

A button draw was made with $100 dollars in prize money split between two winners. The first winner, Vern Nokinsky of Norquay, was awarded $60. Joyce Mclean of Kamsack took the remaining money, which was donated by Dale Palagian in memory of Ted Palagian.

A total of $150 was offered as a prize for a draw. The two winners of the draw were Ross Tressel and Bob Leko of Preeceville. The oldest team, which was the George Mclean rink, was awarded $40.

“The senior bonspiel is mainly for friendly competition and comradery,” said Vern Schick, who organized the event. The event ended with an “excellent” banquet on January 19 catered by Del Palagian.

Schick acknowledged all those who donated prizes and money, as well as the volunteers who assisted him in “making the event a great four days.”

“Everyone was thankful for the great ice,” he said, recognizing Roman and Zenovie Gulka for their work in preparing the rink.
