A fitness trend that originated in Oregon just last year has made its way to Saskatchewan and folks who attended the Yorkton Exhibition Fair last week got a glimpse at the sport.

Goat yoga was one of many activities offered around the  fair grounds.

The class was offered every day and took place right inside the petting zoo.

So, what is ‘goat yoga’?

It’s simply yoga, with goats!

An instructor leads a class through various classic yoga poses and moves; all while small goats pick and poke their way around those taking part.

It works well with goats since they are such friendly and curious animals.

Wendy Nesseth was the instructor of goat yoga at the fair. She said it was her very first time being involved with goat yoga, and she’d be instructing the class every day of the fair - barring any injuries she joked.

“I’ve been teaching yoga for many years,” she said. “What made me want to do [goat yoga]? Actually, YouTube. There’s some really fun videos of goat yoga.”

She said she’s also a major animal lover.

“Animals are always in the present moment, so yoga is all about being present with what is and present with the sensations in your body, and animals are so good at that.”

After her first session, Nesseth said it was a “pretty neat experience.”

Those who were interested in participating just had to show up with their own yoga mat, and an interest in animals.
