Duck Mountain Super League (DMSL) curlers assembled in Canora on December 13 to test their skills in the fifth draw of a round-robin competition.

Randy Trofimenkoff’s team, sponsored by Nykolaishen Farm Equipment, was up against Ken Newell’s Norquay foursome. Newell took an early lead but faltered when Trofimenkoff stole four points in ends five and six. The Kamsack team was one up coming home with hammer, but Newell scored one to force an extra end. Newell, sponsored by Challoner Farm Inc., stole another point in the ninth end and walked away with the win.

Benito’s Rick Kinaschuk, backed by W.F. Schnieder and Son, and Fred Perepiolkin of Kamsack, sponsored by Nykolaishen Farms, engaged in a very close game. Kinaschuk had the lead after three ends, but this dwindled to a tie after six. The Benito team rallied to defeat Perepiolkin in eight ends.

Canora’s host team of Terry Dennis, Bob Kolodzeijski, Terry Wilson and John Zbitniff took the ice against DMSL leaders Jeremy Hrycenko of Arran. Dennis and his team mates, sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, played very well and were two points up coming home.

Hrycenko and his charges, sponsored by Rawhides Restaurant, ran out of bullets in the eighth end and lost their first game.

Three DMSL teams, Hrycenko, Kinaschuk and Newell, currently share the lead with three victories each. Perepiolkin and Bowes have won two games, and Trofimenkoff and Dennis each have a single win.

Duck Mountain Super League curling was to return to Kamsack on December 20 when Trofimenkoff was scheduled to play Dennis, Newell was pitted against Perepiolkin, and Bowes was to take on Hrycenko.

Men’s curling resumes in Benito on January 3 when the final regulation matches will be played.

The Super League finals are slated for Kamsack January 10 when over $1,000 in prize money will be up for grabs.
