Another former YRHS Raider football player has found success at the Junior level, as former Regional Raider linebacker Layne Hull was recently named the Larry Wruck Defensive Player of the Game for his performance in the 2015 Canadian Bowl, the Canadian Junior Football League’s (CJFL) annual National Championship game.
Hull, who graduated from the YRHS in 2013, intercepted one pass, made two tackles, assisted on three more and blocked a punt that he then recovered and ran 30 yards back for a touchdown to be named the Defensive MVP of the National Championship despite his Okanagan Sun club falling 38-24 to the Saskatoon Hilltops. “It’s a great honour to be named the defensive player of the game,” Hull told Yorkton This Week in an interview following the Canadian Bowl. “I just wanted to go out there and do my thing, play my game to help our team win.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t get it done, but the experience of playing in the national final game was unreal and being named the Defensive Player of the Game is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
As for next season, Hull is unsure of where he’ll go, saying he may stay with the Sun for a fourth year in an attempt to win the elusive Canadian Bowl title if he doesn’t test the CIS ranks. “I definitely have plans to go play CIS football after next year or maybe even next year if I get offers,” mentioned Hull, continuing, “But if I go back to the Sun it will be with the same expectations - win that national final game.”
Through the regular season Hull - who is in his third season as a member of the Sun – played in seven games, made 14 tackles and assisted on seven more. He also had 3.5 sacks and forced one fumble before adding 14 more tackles, one more sack, two interceptions and a blocked punt for a touchdown in just three playoff games.
