The Yorkton Figure Skating Club wrapped up a successful 2015/16 winter season Saturday night with their annual Ice Gala figure skating show at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
The show featured performances by all of the club’s competitive and non-competitive skaters, including routines from U14 bronze medallist Kaitlyn Klemetski, as well provincial junior pairs gold medallist, novice ladies silver medallist and Saskatchewan High Performance Elite Team member Nicki Nagy. “Nicki and Kaitlyn have had amazing seasons this year,” said head skating coach and administrator for Skate Yorkton Susan Nagy. “They’ve done so well with medalling at provincial championships and working with the younger skaters.”
In total over 50 skaters ranging in ages from three to 17 participated in the event that coach Nagy said was the exclamation mark on a successful season. “We’ve had another stellar season,” suggested Nagy, continuing, “We have many members that are part of the Skate Saskatchewan high performance team, part of the Skate Saskatchewan Competitive Development team and this gala is a way to highlight their season as well as highlighting our learn to skate program, our bridging programs and our star skaters that have also competed throughout the season.”
In addition, Nagy said that overall numbers of skaters was up this season from last, with a lot of interest in figure skating coming from the next generation of skaters. “Our numbers are amazing and we’ve got lots of little ones coming up through our system,” mentioned Nagy. “There are lots of little five, six, seven year olds that have decided that they want to be figure skaters, so it’s been a great season and our show really showcased that.”
