Drew Kirk of Langenburg, SK has a very exciting summer ahead of him. Drew has qualified, in the 800 m, for the Hershey Track and Field North American Finals in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The meet takes place on Aug. 4. This program is sponsored by The Hershey Company and features over 400 of the best young track and field athletes in North America between the ages of 9-14.

Every province, territory and all 52 states conducted meets where the top two best qualifying results in each event, in each age category, were forwarded to the US results committee. The top results were then determined to establish the qualifiers for the North American Finals. This is quite the achievement for the 10-year-old Kirk, who is competing against 11-12-year-old athletes.

Kirk's love of track has developed through the Good Spirit School Division's (GSSD) provision of ample opportunities for young athletes to attend several cross country meets as well as both indoor and outdoor track meets throughout the school year.

Drew's mom, a teacher in the GSSD, credits the numerous volunteers who make these meets available to students at both the local and provincial level. "There is no question that without the dedication and commitment of the many volunteers who put these meets on, this opportunity would not exist for my son." Mrs. Kirk credits people like Mr. Dave Baron, Mr. Alan Sharp, Mr. Bob Edwards and the many GSSD teachers who volunteer their time and promote the importance of track and field opportunities for students.

Drew's commitment to working hard, and his determination to succeed at everything he tries, should be great assets as he attempts to achieve his goal of achieving a top ten finish.
