The Yorkton Terriers have added some local talent to their roster for the 2017-18 season.

Goalie Nolan Maier, a 16-year-old Yorkton product, was signed to the Terriers last week after being released from the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL.

Terriers head coach/GM Casey O’Brien said they were happy to add Maier to their roster.

“You can see that he’s got a lot of potential out there. We’re very excited to have him. He’s going to be a hell of a goalie for us,” said O’Brien.

The coach added that any time they can get a good, local player, it’s great for the team.

Having grown up watching the Terriers play, Maier said he’s excited to finally be on the ice with them.

“When I found out I was going to be part of this team, it’s what I wanted to do,” said Maier. “I’m really excited to be a Terrier.”

He said he’s always looked up to the Terriers and how they take part in community events, so he’s looking forward to experiencing that aspect of the team, too.

Maier hasn’t been with the team for long, but he said the practices so far have been good as they prepared for this week’s showcase in Saskatoon.

As the only Yorkton native on the Terriers, Maier said he might feel a little bit more pressure.

“I think the most pressure I have is the pressure I put on myself. Being from here, there’s more friends and family, so I’m more comfortable. I can be me here and that’s what I want,” he said.

Maier spent last season with the Yorkton RawTec Maulers of the SMAAAHL. He played in 24 regular season games and had a .920 save percentage. In playoffs, he played a total of five games and had a .853 save percentage.
