Majkowski nets hat trick in Kindersley

The Yorkton Terriers played three games on the road in the past week picking up a pair of Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League wins.

Terrier coach Trent Cassan said it was a good week for the team.

"We played three games in four nights on the road and got four points," he said.

"I thought we had pretty good effort in each one of them."

The two wins pushed the Terriers into second place in the Sherwood Division with a record of 21-16-1-2 for 45 points.

Weyburn leads the Division with 57-points.

Estevan and Melville are tied for third with 43.

Notre Dame is fifth with 31-points, while Kindersley has 21 in the basement of the Sherwood.

The Terriers made a weekend road swing for a pair of games, starting with a shutout loss Friday in Humboldt to the Itech leading Broncos.

Taylor Duzan gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the first period, with Joey Davies and

Duzan adding second period markers in the 3-0 win.

Kale Thomson faced 42 shots in the Terrier net to be saddled with the loss, while his teammates managed only 25-shots against Matt Hrynkiw, as he earned the shutout.

Cassan said Humboldt is a team which is becoming better as the season moves on.

"They are a team that's on quite a roll right now (13-wins in a row). They're a very good team that are put together to play in May (hosting the RBC). They've got it together pretty good right now," he said, adding the Terriers had chances to be in the game; they hit five goal posts.

Cassan said Thomson was solid in net, as he has been all season.

He noted the rookie netminder has been between the pipes in all four meetings against Humboldt, and is 2-and-2 against the north's best team.

"He made some big saves for us in Humboldt," he said, adding he gave the Terriers a chance.

On Saturday, the Terrier offence missing in Humboldt, erupted in Kindersley.

Powered by a hat trick by Zak Majkowski, the Terriers rolled over the Klippers 7-1.

Jeremy Johnson, Sam Rockwell, Tyler Giebel and Brent Struble added singles for the Terriers.

Dawson MacAuley was in the Terrier nets, facing only 13-shots, with D Jay McGrath spoiling the shut-out bid with only 1:22 left in the game.

Cassan said a team can fall into a lull after a good effort goes for naught as it did in Humboldt, but the Terriers reacted by coming out hard against the Klippers, scoring three early goals.

"We took control of the game right from the start," he said. " We never really gave them a chance to get into the game."

Cassan said MacAuley has steadied himself in goal over his last four starts, and looked good in Kindersley.

"He's improved a lot. You can tell in practice he's got more confidence," said Cassan.

The two game road swing was also a chance to spot a couple of 'Affiliated Players' into the line-up, with Kailum Gervais playing in Humboldt, and Tanner Lishchynsky up in Kindersley for his first Terrier action.

In the case of Lishchynsky, the 16-year-old Captain of the AAA Midget Saskatoon Blazers, Cassan said the young defenceman fit right in.

"He came in and played real good," said the Terrier coach.

Last Wednesday

The Terriers visited Melfort in the middle of last week, and came away with a 5-1 win.

Dawson MacAuley had only his sixth start in the Terrier nets and earned his second win facing only 20-shots.

Offensively, the Terriers had five different goal scorers; Brent Struble, Kailum Gervais, Tayler Thompson, Ryley Stefanyshyn, and Tyler Giebel.
