The YRHS girls' basketball team had a mini tournament over the weekend in which they played three games under the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletics Association.

Coach Chad McDowell said he wasn't as worried much about the scores of the games as he was getting the team playing the best they can.

"Playing well in districts would be a goal," he told the paper. The YRHS team lost their opening game on Friday when they faced Weyburn. Then they rebounded to beat the Moose Jaw Central team, which they scored 62 points against.

McDowell said he's more concerned about the team playing well once the district tournament comes at the beginning of next month.

"We could be participatingand competitive, in districts," he said after their Moose Jaw game over the weekend.

McDowell added that the expectations for his team are high enough.

"Qualifying would be an expectation. Playing well (in districts) would be a goal."

McDowell said that there is one thing that separates the two: "it depends on how we playplay well or not play well."

The three games that McDowell's squad played in over the weekend were simply a preparation phase for the young Lady Raiders: "Definitely" says McDowell.

He added that it was a good sign for the girls to be able to beat Moose Jaw "without a lot of effort".

Today, we didn't make many mistakes," he added."That's probably our highest point total (too)." SHSAA districts for junior girls basketball is scheduled for March 2-3 in Norquay. McDowell added that February comprises "basically half of our season".
