The Yorkton Midget Kinsmen AA Terriers hockey season came down to a game last night in Wilcox.

The Kinsmen Terriers and Notre Dame Hounds played the Yorkton Kinsmen Arena in a game that saw more people than usual in the seating area inside.

It was also one of those instances where the visiting team's goaltender had what looked like his own cheering section.

Matt Kustra of Yorkton was playing one of his few games in a Yorkton arena this season, as a member of the Hounds.

Kustra and company stole a 5-4 victory in a game that came down to the last minute to determine a winner.

Notre Dame had leads of 3-1 and 5-3.

Tyler Shumay scored his fourth goal of the game with just over a minute remaining to bring Yorkton to within a goal, but Kustra shut the door in the last minute to give Notre Dame a 5-4 win and a 1-0 series lead.

It was the opening game of the South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League playoffs.

A crucial game 2 was slated for last night at the Duncan McNeil Arena.

Says Ben Shewchuk, head coach of the Kinsmen Terriers: "We need to win the battles-simple as that!"

According to Shewchuk, the two clubs are no strangers to each other, having met five times this season with the results being "split", he said.

He said they shouldn't have to change anything to even up the series.

"I don't think we played too badly a game tonight," he said following the 5-4 loss, a game Yorkton nearly tied.

"It was a pretty good effort."

The teams were scheduled to play at the Athol College of Notre Dame last night, however results were not available in time for press.

A Yorkton victory sends the series back to the Kinsmen this Friday. If the Hounds win, they advance.
