Millstone Raceway should be packed on Sept. 18

Rick Bradshaw of Schrader's Motors is probably one of a large group of locals who are looking forward to some good racing on Saturday and likely also hoping for just as good weather conditions.

Millstone Raceway, located just outside of Yorkton, does not see a whole lot of action throughout the calendar year. But this coming weekend, that is going to change.

Albeit only for seven or eight hours but Sept. 18 is the date that 300 or so experienced motocross racers will meet at Millstone Raceway in the final race of the Saskatchewan provincial series, says Bradshaw, general manager and owner of Schrader's Motors.

With usually only a couple of races held there per year, and the Sept. 18 provincial series being the only one this year, there is a lot of work that goes into track preparation says Bradshaw, who deflected any credit to Ken Lutz of Pride Lawn and Landscaping.

"It doesn't really get set up until the day before the race," says Bradshaw.

The provincial series consists of 10-12 races.

"They want to move the series around the province. It's what makes sense for all the riders in the province."

Bradshaw said Yorkton had been originally set up to hold a race in late July but the association couldn't find another club to help run the banquet that usually follows the race.

When the provincial series makes its one and only stop here in town over the weekend, he said there will be an awful lot of manpower going into getting the track ready.

"It has to do with manpower," insists Bradshaw when asked why there is only one race there this year."There is a group of club members that helps look after the track" adding that most of the work "starts two days before the race."

He said ideal conditions for the raceway is to have the dirt moist enough do it doesn't get in the faces of the riders.

He said competitors will sign up either on Friday at Schrader's or the morning of the race and that everyone is looking forward to it and hoping for good weather conditions.

"It always is (a good day)," insists Bradshaw. There will be several local riders on the track that day and he is hoping for a very strong turnout.

Last year's provincial series included 22 races. There were riders as young as four years old competing too, he adds.

The track is owned by the Yorkton Motorcycle Club and was formed in 1995 with the goal of covering all aspects of motorcycling and promoting the sport for the enjoyment of its membership.

Saturday's racing starts at 10 a.m.
