The Sacred Heart senior boys volleyball team got a bit of a boost over the weekend when a few of their regulars came back in time for a match with rivals, the YRHS Raiders.

"We were missing our captain," points out Curtis Moen, late on Friday afternoon when Moen's Sacred Heart Saints took on the Regional.

Sacred Heart was a busy place all weekend long for sports action, the volleyball team played indoors while the boys' soccer team took aim at its second straight provincial title (see Page B2 for details).

The Saints senior boys hosted their home volleyball tournament over the weekend in the Halo Dome, Moen reports.

"The Saints squad was shorthanded for most of the tournament with provincial soccer and football playoffs, but the team fought hard in each set that they played," explains Moen.

"I would like to commend Anthony Fetsch and Colin Shewchuk on their aggressive court play."

The tournament was an eight-team round robin format which included the following visiting teams: Esterhazy, the YRHS, Melville, Langenburg, Kincaid, Lanigan and Moose Jaw Vanier.

Moen had at least two players return to his squad following a monumental victory over Moose Jaw Central, in which SHHS won on a 2-1 comeback.

Several soccer players from SHHS made it back to close out the night with the volleyball team.

SHHS played Esterhazy early in the tournament and won in two straight sets, before falling to rivals, the Regional later that day.

Moen said he was "hoping to at least rally with them", he said of some of the bigger schools that took part in the tournament, namely the Regional and Moose Jaw's Vanier.

After the round robin, the placings saw the YRHS in first, Kincaid in second, Melville claimed third and there was a three-way tie for fourth place.

"After a tie breaking procedure, Lanigan prevailed to move into the playoffs in fourth place," said Moen.

The tournament went along smoothly, he said, and he wishes to thank the referees, canteen workers and the care takers who put in many hours, making the tournament a success.
