Hockey players hoping to play Junior level hockey in the fall have a new way to refine their skills this summer leading up to fall try-out camps.
Yorkton Terrier Assistant Coach Casey O'Brien is hosting a summer-long program based out of Melville.
The program will run through most of the summer with evening sessions each week, explained O'Brien. He said he has players divided into two groups, with those who played Bantam AA and Midget AA last season going Monday and Wednesday, with Midget AAA and high level players hitting the ice for work-outs Tuesday and Thursday.
The sessions, which run for two hours each day, focus on areas suchas skill development, timing drills, and scrimmages, focusing on areas players need to refine heading to the Western Junior Hockey League, or the Junior 'A' level such as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
"It's for players looking to advance to the next level," said O'Brien.
Response has already been strong with 39 players registered over the two groups.
In fact, O'Brien said he has already maxed out on the number of goaltenders he can work with.
"I could use a few more defencemen in both groups," he said, adding they have a couple of forward spots open too.
The camp, in its first year, will be an annual one, said O'Brien, "because of the high calibre of players who have shown interest."
As it stands among the players already involved are one who will attend SaskFirst camps later this summer, as well as a number of WHL and SJHL-bound hopefuls.
