The Yorkton Peewee Gridders proved to be the worst kind of hosts Sunday afternoon at Yorkton’s Century Field, dismantling the visiting Regina Rams 56-0 to improve to 5-0 for the 2015 Regina Minor Football Peewee Division season.
The Peewee Gridders remain tied atop the RMF Peewee standings with both the Balgonie North Griffins (5-0)and Regina Riders (5-0), two points up on the fourth place Mustangs (4-1).
The Razorbacks (3-1) and Thunder (3-2) sit in fifth and six with six points each, while the Patriots (2-2) and Vikings (2-3) round out the top eight with four points each.
Ninth and tenth are held down by the Argos (1-4) and Balgonie South Griffins (1-4), while three teams, the Huskies (0-4), Golden Hawks (0-5) and Rams (0-5) all remain winless in 2015.
Yorkton opened the game scoring on back-to-back-to-back possessions to quickly knock the idea of an upset win out of the Rams’ heads. “We came out strong right out of the gates,” mentioned Peewee Gridder head coach Grant Edgar. “We scored on our first three plays which is always a good way to start a game and pretty much rolled from there.”
Two players that really helped the Peewees roll to their huge 56-0 victory were Josh Haczkewicz and Carter Pawliw. “The offence was really spread out for us, but Josh Haczkewicz probably led us offensively today,” said Edgar, continuing, “and Carter Pawliw - a little slotback for us - also had a good game scoring two touchdowns. Those two guys were really strong today.”
However Pawliw and Haczkewicz weren’t the only players from the offensive side of the ball that had strong games. According to Edgar the entire peewee offensive line has been outstanding, not just in the most recent game, but over the entire season so far. “Our offensive line has been absolutely fantastic this season. In five games we haven’t given up one sack yet,” boasted a proud Peewee head coach. “Our offensive line has been creating huge holes for our backs to run thru and when we’re passing they are giving our quarterbacks ample protection and they are a big reason we’re 5-0 right now.”
Next up
The next action for the Yorkton Peewee Gridders (5-0) will be this Sunday, September 20, when they travel to Regina to take on the Razorbacks (3-1). “We’re riding a little shutout streak here and hopefully we can continue that next week against the Razorbacks,” offered head coach Edgar on their next opponent. “The Razorbacks, they’re a team that is 3-1 right now and depending on what they did in their last game they could be 4-1.
“That will be a tough game because there are about four teams right now that are separating themselves from the rest and us and the Razorbacks are two of those four so it’ll be our first true test next week.”
Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 3:15p.m. at Leibel Field.
