t's not a secret.
The Weyburn Youngfellow Wings were embarrassed on Saturday, February 15 at the Farrell Agencies Arena to the tune of a 10-1 drubbing in game one of their two game provincial total point series against the Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers.
But that was the past. On Friday, February 21 at Weyburn's Crescent Point Place, the host Youngfellow Wings had a chance at redemption.
They had a chance to regain some lost pride and try to claw their way back into the thick of the provincial championship race.
Instead, they were clobbered once again by the indomitable Sherring Gold Terriers offence. This time the score line read: Yorkton nine, Weyburn three, final.
Kaeden Korczak led the Terriers offensively with three goals and two assists while Alex Moar, Jackson Berezowski, Aiden Bulych, Zach McIntyre, Tanner Hoffman and Kishaun Gervais also found the back of the net.
Yorkton opened the scoring early in the game on a McIntyre goal less than three minutes into the first period.
However, two quick goals by Weyburn, one each by Braden Birnie and Ethan Ernst, gave the home side a 2-1 advantage midway through the opening frame.
The Sherring Gold Terriers drew even when, with 4:44 remaining in the period, Alex Moar's shot beat Wings netminder Jordan Muhr.
A tripping penalty to Weyburn's Luke Arndt just 21 seconds after the Moar tying goal gave the Terriers a chance to retake the lead before the end of the period.
A chance they would not squander, as Aiden Bulych made it 3-2 with just under four minutes remaining in the period.
A goal by Steven Kesslering five minutes into the second period gave the host Wings some life, however Kaeden Korczak quickly snuffed that life out with a pair of goals, the first with 9:06 left in the period and the second with just over a minute remaining to give the Sherring Gold Terriers a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame.
Berezowski made it 6-3 with a powerplay goal four minutes into the third period and the Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers never looked back, adding three more goals to make it a 9-3 final.
"That's kind of the outcome I was hoping for," said a satisfied Chad Korczak, head coach of the Sherring Gold Terriers, after the game. "Our mindset now is in knowing that if we play our game and play how we can, those are the kinds of results we can get against anyone."
It may seem like bragging, but in reality Korczak might just be telling the truth. His team has been flying since the Christmas break losing just twice, once in regular season play and once in the finals of the Regina Peewee Classic hockey tournament.
They've also just finished dismantling the only team that has given them trouble this season, trouncing the Weyburn Youngfellow Wings 19-4 in their two game provincial total point series.
Next action
The Yorkton Peewee Sherring Gold Terriers will meet the winner of the Regina Royals vs. Regina Blues two game series in the next round of the provincials. Currently the Regina Blues lead the Regina Royals 3-2 after one game.
The Sherring Gold Terriers, by virtue of their first place finish, have earned a first round bye in the playoffs and await their second round opponent in SSMHL play, which will begin sometime after March ninth.
