Preeceville Filipino basketball team wins championship game

The Preeceville Boars basketball team won the 2016-2017 All-Filipino Championship in winter basketball tournament organized by the Parkland Filipino Canadian Association Inc. (PFCAI) held at Dr. Brass School in Yorkton.

            The Preeceville Boars basketball team won the 2016-2017 All-Filipino Championship in winter basketball tournament organized by the Parkland Filipino Canadian Association Inc. (PFCAI) held at Dr. Brass School in Yorkton.

            The championship game was held on February 5 with six teams entered, said Ariel Vargas, coach. “The Preeceville Boars played against six teams with an undefeated record of 8-0.

“We played all winter, beginning in November and concluding with the championship game on February 5,” he said.

            The six teams entered in the championship tournament were: the Russell Sentinels of Manitoba, Preeceville Boars, and Sky, Marks, Century 21 and Baileys, all from Yorkton.

            Alfie Jaway was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Ian Redoblado, who was named the three-point champion, won the title for a third consecutive year.

            Team members consisted of Jesse Santos of Lintlaw; Jaycarr dela Torre of Sturgis; Roland Ferrenal of Invermay; Bernie Divina, Bernabe Lagrama and Kerwin Sarto, all of Foam Lake; Rovic Javelona of Theodore and Alfie Jaway, Tommy Trinidad, Ricky Irlandez, Jippy Viran, Paul Barnachea, Gregorio Roguel, Rosendo Anguluan, John Ray Algabre, Ian Redoblado, and Manny Villar, all of Preeceville.

“The team practiced in Preeceville throughout the year, with tournament games played on weekends prior to the championship game,” said Vargas.
