The New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic is a national invitational boy's high school basketball tournament held in Nova Scotia.

The members and coaches of the Yorkton Regional High School senior boys' basketball team are among the competitors in this year's tournament. Planning for the tournament was initiated by individuals from the Nova Scotia school and community with a special interest in sports and more particularly, basketball.

The Coal Bowl Classic is held at Breton Education Centre, New Waterford, Nova Scotia. Breton Education Centre is a junior-senior high school which opened in 1970 with a student population in excess of 2200. The current population of the school is approximately 700 students.

The Town of New Waterford is a coal-mining community with the approximate population of 7695 situated twelve miles from the City of Sydney and from the town of Glace Bay.

Basketball has had a long tradition in the town and that tradition was exemplified and recognized during induction ceremonies of the N.S Sports Hall of Fame in 1981.

New Waterford, first and foremost, is a town with a strong mining heritage and coal mining and basketball have been a significant part of the town's history.

The Coal Bowl Classic is said to have become a major event, fast becoming a prestigious Canadian tournament.

Teams in this year's tournament are divided into two divisions. There are a total of 10 teams, including the YRHS Raiders in the Bill Burns division. The Breton Education Centre, the Nechako Valley Secondary School, Ecole Secondaire Roger Comtois and the Hants North Rural High School.

The other division is called the Bruce Campbell division, includes the Glace Bay High School, Mount Boucherie Secondary School, Three Oaks Senior High School, Corner Brook High School and Sackville High School.

The YRHS was scheduled to play last night against Breton Education Centre. They are scheduled to play again today at 1 p.m., Nova Scotia time zone.
