The YRHS volleyball team hosted a tournament over the weekend, starting on Friday and going until Saturday. They went 4-1 through the round robin.

The YRHS senior boys volleyball went 4-1 through the round robin and appeared to be in cruise control for the playoffs.

Then they ran into a Prince Albert team that was clearly intent on going all the way, too.

As it happened, Prince Albert stormed out to hefty leads in both sets and went on to a two-set sweep of the YRHS club.

"It was a little disappointing in terms of our energy level," quotes YRHS coach Dion Pfeifer.

It was the solo home tournament of the season for the Yorkton Regional High School senior boys' volleyball team. Included in the tournament were teams from all over the province, including Crocus Plains of Manitoba.

The YRHS club sailed through the round robin, losing only to Crocus Plains in two straight sets.

YRHS then knocked off Estevan in what coach Pfeifer said was his team's best performance of the tournament.

Then they played Prince Albert St. Mary's. For only the second time in a day-and-a-half, YRHS took it where it hurts, twice.

"We were 4-1 in the round robin," Pfiefer recalled.

"Our best match of the tournament was Estevan. He said the worst part was the way they bowed out against the powerful St. Mary's team.

"We made some setting, hitting errors. It was pretty tough."

He noted that all he was limited to doing by that point was "encourage them to keep fighting".

St. Mary's had good leads in both sets, and used them to win by final scores of 25-13 and 25-19.

St. Mary's would advance to the finals as a result of their win vs. the YRHS. The YRHS advanced to the tournament semi finals with wins over Roblin, 25-21 and 25-21. Swift Current took them to three sets. YRHS won the opener 25-16, Swift Current won the second set 26-24 and the Regional won the third, 15-4.

They beat Weyburn 25-18 and 26-24, beat Prince Albert Carlton, 25-14 and 25-10. The only match they lost in the round robin came against Crocus Plains (Brandon) 16-25 and 21-25.

Overall, he said the win over Estevan was their best effort. It was important to be able to beat them in tournament play because they will likely meet again at the southern regionals this weekend, Pfeifer notes.
