Raiders take down Moose Jaw Peacock

The Yorkton Regional High School senior boys football team is on the verge of doing something that they haven't done in a long time.

They have opened the season at 2-0.

Following their opening victory in Moose Jaw a week-and-a-half ago, the YRHS Raiders hosted the AE Peacock Tornadoes Tuesday night at Century Field.

It was also their first football game that took place on a Tuesday evening.

Even head coach Roby Sharpe admitted it was a different feel, with it not being a Friday or a Saturday kickoff.

"On a Tuesday, yeah!" he said moments after his team was forced to hang on for dear life in a 27-21 win over Peacock, who came on late in the fourth quarter but would eventually give the football back to the YRHS offence after a loss of downs.

The Raiders came to play, gave up the game's opening points by way of a safety, then starting slinging and running the ball like a team on a mission.

"It's been good so far," he said, of the team's new league/home.

"I knew Peacock was going to be good. It's tough to (determine) where we stood" he said referring to the league standings.

On offence, and there was no shortage of offensive attack throughout the game. Dalton Fichtner threw the football and ran it, including a 40+ yard scamper that put the Raiders up 14-5 late in the game's second quarter.

Darius Haberstock nearly had an interception for the defence and Tyson Haas helped out in the open-field tackle department.

"It was a great football game," added coach Sharpe.

It wasn't all a cakewalk though.

Up 21-11 early into the second half, the Tornadoes pulled back to tie the game at 21-21.

"We let them back into it which was our own fault but that's what makes it exciting," he insisted.
The Raiders are in for a shorter-than-usual week with week 3's game coming four days after the Peacock win. Yorkton heads out to Weyburn for a Saturday matinee on Sept. 22.

Yorkton's next home game will be a night start when they take on Moose Jaw Central at 7 p.m.
