Senior ball on tonight

The SESBL schedule picks up again tonight following a break for the long holiday weekend.

The SESBL schedule picks up again tonight following a break for the long holiday weekend. The Yorkton Junior Cardinals, Yorkton Yankees, Yorkton Orioles and the Parkland Padres are the local teams that will be competing this season in the South East Senior Baseball League.

The league will have some new faces for the 2012 season, including the Orioles, who will be playing half of the schedule.

There will be two games tonight (May 23) in league action. Both will involve the Canora Supers travelling to Jubilee Park to take on the Junior Cardinals and the Yankees. The Cardinals' game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. The Yankees will take on the Supers following that game, scheduled for an 8:30 p.m., opening pitch. The Yankees and Orioles have already had their season openers, while the Junior Cardinals are looking at their first game on home diamond this year.

Also new for the team is a coaching change.

Brian Trollope, who had been serving as one of the team advisors for the past four summers, has joined the Yankees. Cliff Leshyshyn will take over the team this year, says Trollope.

Leschsyhyn said the roster isn't available as of press time, however, he expects there to be more players joining the team from nearby Manitoba this season.

Other scheduled action for the next week will see the Yankees and Junior Cardinals play each other on May 27 at 4 p.m.

It will be the first of three games that week for the Yankees. They will also take on the Canora Supers in Canora on May 31. On Friday June 1, they will make their first trip of the season to play the league's returning team, the Langenburg Indians. Trollope told Yorkton This Week that the Indians were once the cream of the crop in south east baseball. They were league champions in 2002.

The Yankees will get their crack at them on June 5 at Jubilee Park diamond 1 at 8 p.m. The following day, the Junior Cardinals are scheduled to take on Canora at the Al Sepieha field in Canora. Game time is 6:15 p.m.

SESBL play goes until the final day of June this summer when the Junior Cardinals and the Orioles play each other at Jubilee Park. The Junior Cardinals are going into the season as defending champs after knocking off Willowbrook in three games last year.
