Sacred Heart High School hosted an eight-team basketball tournament last weekend, consisting of four boys teams and four girls teams.
The tournament was run in an exhibition round robin format, with each team playing three games. In the boys’ division, Brandon Neelin took first place. Yorkton Regional High School took second. Sacred Heart took third and Swan Valley took fourth.
In the girls’ division, first place went to Dauphin, second place went to Brandon, third place went to Melville and fourth place went to Sacred Heart.
Garrett Karcha is the head coach of the SHHS senior boys’ team. Although his team was missing players, he said he was happy with how they played.
“I think we played well,” he said. “We hadn’t played in over two weeks and had limited practice time after February break.”
Karcha said although his team wasn’t in their best condition, they played close games all the way through.
The basketball season is winding down, and Karcha said he’s been happiest with the Saints’ offensive play this year.
“Our main focus was on offense, especially after last year, and it has definitely gotten better,” he said. “We’ve come out with guys who can score.”
Karcha said he’s also happy with his team’s chemistry – saying the always have a great time when they’re together.
Going forward, he said his focus for regionals will be to strengthen up their defensive play and to see his grade twelve players step up.
“We have a lot of grade twelves. I’m looking for them to play their best basketball and to give their best effort defensively, in particular,” he said.
“And consistency. I think if we play a consistent game, then we can beat most teams.”
The Saints will now get almost two weeks off of game action to practice before they head to regionals on March 17-18.
