A total of 13 athletes from Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton represented the school at the provincial track and field meet in Saskatoon from June 2-4.

There were many impressive finishes, but the top performer from Sacred Heart was Ashley Schrader, who won a silver medal in the midget girls’ javelin division. She had a personal competition best throw of 31.94 metres, which was three metres beyond her district championship throw.

Other noteworthy finishes at provincials from Sacred Heart were:

Teagan Langridge, who vaulted a personal best 1.65 metres in the junior girl’s pole vault placing 6th in the event.

Camryn Danchilla was a member of the midget girl’s 4 x 100 metre relay team that placed 7th and was also part of the 4 x 400 metre relay team that placed 4th overall.

Charis Adefolarin was also a part of the 4 x 100 midget girls relay fourth place finish.

Adefolarin  also made several finals at the meet running some excellent races.

Madison Butchko was a part of the senior girls 4 x 100 metre relay team that finished 5th.

Rachel Sterzuk is one of four coaches for the Sacred Heart track and field athletes.

She said despite the various weather conditions (from hot and windy to toonie-sized hail) she was impressed by the performance her athletes put forth.

“Track and field is a tough one because you’re always chasing those personal bests and lots of our kids did have personal bests, so it was a great weekend,” she said. “Sometimes, depending on weather, you won’t make a personal best.”

She explained that the 3000 metre race on Saturday, for example, wasn’t ideal because it was “ridiculously windy and very hot.”

“Every one of them were working so hard to perform the best they could, to overcome the nerves. And we have a very young team,” Sterzuk explained.

“There are a lot of grade nines, and a lot of kids moved up to midget that were really bantams. But it was a good year for all of them to just go and see provincials and see what it’s all about.”

Sterzuk also added that Schrader bringing home the silver medal is wonderful.

“She’s just a talented, talented athlete,” she said. “It was wonderful for her to be able to throw a personal best at provincials. It’s clear that she’s a very talented javelin thrower.”

Schrader went on to win the MVP award for the track and field team at the Sacred Heart spring athletic awards banquet.
