The Yorkton Terriers held their annual awards banquet Friday, wrapping up their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season.

Club president Lyle Walsh said in spite of losing out in their first playoff series to Melville, it was still a good year.

"It was definitely an interesting exciting year again for our hockey club. In a bit of a re-building year they did very well. Finishing second in our division was a good accomplishment," he said. "In the beginning of the year not many would have predicted that outcome.

"As fans, we were able to watch this team try hard, work hard and achieve as much as they could."

Walsh said the team had two recent developments away from the hockey ice which spoke to the success, and future of the team.

"Recently in the last few weeks we have received some good news," he said.

"First, we are very happy to have been able to re-sign both Don Chesney and Trent Cassan.
"We feel this is a great manager/coach combination and we were pleased with the performance of both and are glad to have their contracts renewed."

The second piece of good news had to do with an honour bestowed Wednesday.

"Just this week we were also honoured by the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce during their Celebrate Success awards night. The Terriers were finalists and one of the three organizations to receive an award for 'Community Merit," said Walsh.

"This was a big bonus for the club and a real tribute to the players who have done a great job in the community this year.

"From spending time in the schools, being part of the Big Brothers, singing Christmas carols at the nursing home, and a variety of other good deeds, they were nominated for this award and were able to be finalists and receive the award. It speaks volumes for the calibre of young men we have on this team and how they handle themselves in the community."

Walsh said the character of the Terriers which helped earn the award also speaks to the product on the ice, adding he is already looking forward to next fall.

"As I said earlier, we still have a young team, many will be returnees," he said. "Our list of future prospects is strong and I think the future of this team is strong going forward.

"Next season will come around soon enough and we will be ready."
