The 2016 Yorkton Crush softball season has the potential to be one of the most exciting seasons in recent history.

In addition to their regularly scheduled league games, the club will also host two provincial championships – the U12 and U14 ‘C’ Girls South championships from July 8-10 – as well as the 2016 981 League year-end tournament. “We’ve got a lot of things going on this season, and we’re looking forward to them all,” said Yorkton Crush President Brent Zimmer. “It’s going to be a really busy season for us. We’re hosting provincials, the league tournament and a fun day where we’ll just bring in different teams from communities surrounding Yorkton and play some ball.”

Zimmer says the busy schedule is thanks in large part to the resurgence of fastpitch softball within the community. “It (fastpitch softball) was pretty popular, then it slowed down, but I think it’s starting to come back now,” mentioned Zimmer, adding that when he first came to Yorkton the sport was on life support. “When I came here four years ago and started getting involved with the club our numbers weren’t all that high, but last year we had quite a few girls and this year we’re expecting to at least match that or get more.”

Currently Zimmer said that there are just over 60 athletes registered with the club, although that number will continue to grow before registration closes on April 30 for all six divisions. “People can still register for softball for our Learn-to-Play program, which is ages six to eight, then we’ve got U10 Mites, U12 Squirts, U14 Peewees, U16 Bantams and U19 Midgets.”

People interested in registering to play for the Yorkton Crush softball team can do so by visiting their website at www.yorktoncrushsoftball.com and filling out an online registration form.

For those interested in coaching, there will be a Community Softball Coaching Clinic in Yorkton April 29 and 30. Registration information for the clinic can be found at the Saskatchewan Softball website: www.softball.sk.ca.

There will also be a softball Annual General Meeting tomorrow night at 7:30p.m. at the Kinsmen blue room.
