The Yorkton United FC begins men's play this week as well as futsal games, says Mike Jakubiec of YUFC. The YUFC is still accepting registrations for the league. Soccer begins on May 28. Futsal starts on May 27. The schedule for soccer is set for an expected 15 games based on a four-team 7v7 format and the cost to participate is $115. Matches are scheduled to take place at the Parkland Mall pitch. Registrations can also be made at the Canada Soccer Shop located on Broadway Str., near Cutter's Hair Salon.


The Western Major Baseball League starts locally on the first weekend of June. The Cardinals head out to Melville to open their season. The following day is their opener at home when they host the Regina Red Sox at Jubilee Park.


The first two weeks of June will be busy for the Yorkdale Central Public School football team. They host Preeceville on June 1 at 4 p.m. They have two practices scheduled for the week of June 3-9, one on June 5 and a second on June 7. Both start at 3:45 p.m. On June 8 (Friday), they are in Watson for a 4 p.m., start. The final week of June will see them either play or practice all seven days of the week, including a tournament taking them to Saskatoon.


The lacrosse Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season Sunday at the Kinsmen Arena over the Saskatoon Steelers (see story on Page A17). The team heads to Moose Jaw and Regina this weekend in search of their second win. Justin Genaille and Zach Soke both produced multi-point efforts against the Steelers. Yorkton's record now sits at 1-3.


The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) championships were conducted electronically. Scores from various schools were submitted over the internet, says Darren Wandy, coach of the Yorkton Regional High School. Results saw three awards go to his YRHS team. They were: Lea Burnard. Burnard won the gold medal for the senior girls' category. Tara Lazurko was declared the silver medalist, also in the senior girls category. The final award to the Regional was the team collectively merited the bronze medal for a senior high team, says Wandy.
