Spring has arrived in Yorkton and with that comes something that many youth in the city have been waiting for since the autumn of 2014.

Yorkton Minor Football’s spring football will once again be taking place this year with the first outdoor practice scheduled for Tuesday, May 5.

But unlike previous years, spring football will not be taking place at Kinsmen Century Field. Instead it will be at Yorkdale Central School due in large part to the work being done at the usual training grounds. “Century Field is unavailable this spring because they are resurfacing it so all of the practices will be at the Yorkdale School soccer fields,” said Jason Boyda, one of the men who will be running the spring football practices. “Century Field is pretty mucked up right now and we’ve got tons of space out here so we decided to practice here.

“We don’t need goalposts because there is no kicking game in spring football and we don’t want to wreck Sacred Heart’s field so we decided to have it at Yorkdale because we really just need the grass.”

Boyda also dispelled rumours that spring football is only open to public school kids, saying that spring football is open to anyone from grade five to eight no matter what school division they’re in.

In fact, Boyda believes that, while spring football will benefit all players who take part, it will especially benefit those that are looking to play high school football at Sacred Heart next year or the year after due to the way the spring football program is ran. “They get to play nine-man football here for spring football if they’re older players, six-man if they’re younger, and that’s the system or the league (nine-man) that they play at Sacred Heart so that benefits them especially,” offered Boyda. “They’ll get to play nine-man and hopefully we’ll transfer them over to them in the fall and help their program in the long run.”

Registration for spring football is still open and costs a reasonable 40 dollars. Spring football will consist of two practices and one game a week.
