Stock car drives run their laps during a test period Saturday at the Yellowhead International Speedway. The day had to be cancelled later that afternoon due to unsafe track conditions.

The Saskatchewan Racing League was hoping to get two full days of racing in over the May 2-4 long weekend, but according to weather conditions, they barely got one in.

By about 9 a.m., on Saturday the track was in perfect condition, says new race president Brandon Dickey. Then it was followed by some heavy rain which made the track too wet and essentially, unsafe to hold full-out races on, he said.

By 4 p.m., on Saturday, the races for the day had to be cancelled.
"It was pretty good at 9 a.m., this morning. We were trying to pack the mud in." More then a few runs around the track had to be made by the tractors to help pack the track more and hopefully dry out water which came when the rains hit.

To no avail, said Dickey.

"The cars could not get out because the track was too wet."

At one point on Saturday, seven cars took runs, but the Parkland Racing Association deemed the track was still too unsafe to hold races.

"It was driveable but too much water" was still on the track, offers Dickey.

The long weekend was the opening of the 2011 PRA Stock Car Race schedule.

The following is the remainder of the schedule. All races are held at the Yellowhead International Speedway just outside of Yorkton.

The next race date will be June 12 at 2 p.m., sponsored by LDM Foods. On July 3, races start at 5 p.m. The first race of August is scheduled for Aug. 21 and starts at 2 p.m., and two races will conclude the season in September, and the finale will be the annual demolition derby on Sept. 18. The day before will be the final race date (Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.).

Admission to the race track is $8 for those 13 years of age and over, $4 for those 6-12 and free for kids five years and under.
