The Canora Supers’ first game of the season in the South East Saskatchewan Baseball League ended on May 10 with the umpire calling the game in the sixth inning and giving the Yorkton Yankees a 2-1 victory.
It was a cool, damp Tuesday evening and the weather report did not look promising all day, but somehow enough rain stayed away and the game was played,” said Greg Andreychuk, Supers’ player coach.
“The entirety of the game was played between a drizzle and a light rain, but the shale in field soaked in the moisture making the field playable, he said. However with the score 2-1 for Yorkton heading into the bottom of the sixth, the game was suddenly called by umpire Shaun Beatty due to fear of players getting injured, resulting in a Yankees win. “The field conditions did not deteriorate at all from the start of the game until the middle of the sixth inning, and the Supers were not warned ahead of time that the sixth would be the final inning,” Andreychuk said. “The final decision did not sit well with the Supers, as it was a closely contested game which would have went down to the wire.”
Darcy Blommaert started on the mound for the Supers, tossing two innings while surrendering just one earned run. Terry Cumming pitched the next three innings and also allowed one earned run.
“Cumming showed great perserverance by getting out of several jams while making his Supers’ pitching debut,” said Andreychuk. Blommaert took the loss.
“ The Supers once again faced the perennial SESBL top pitcher Logan Calanchie, and could muster only one run off two hits, one each from Evan Rostotski and Travis Mentanko. Brogan Legebokoff scored the lone Supers’ run in defeat.”
The youth movement continues in Canora as Jordan Bieber and Rawlee Wyatt made their Supers debu s . Both played midget baseball in 2015 as part of the Parkland Expos Midget program.
The next game was to have been played May 16 with the Supers heading to Langenburg to square off with the Indians.
