Seven athletes from the Yorkton Taekwondo Club made the long journey across the frigid Saskatchewan plain to take part in the 2014 instalment of Grandmaster Kim's Taekwondo Challenge held at Regina's Turvey Centre.

The seven athletes, Kallie Buenneke, Zane Chopik, Daniel Bazin, Tyler Buenneke, Justin Fookes, Eric Fookes and Shane Varjassy were all guaranteed at least two matches in the double elimination tournament.

The seven athletes were joined in Regina by Master Wayne Mitchell, Matthew Bodnaryk and Autumn Ashcroft who all acted as coaches, and Susanne Mitchell who took part in the competition as a referee.

All of them, however, went past the two match count with all seven athletes taking home at least one medal.

Kallie Buenneke, Justin Fookes and Shane Varjassy all claimed gold in their divisions in the Sparring category while Tyler Buenneke and Eric Fookes took home silver in Sparring respectively.

Daniel Bazin also medalled in Sparring, winning bronze.

Both Buenneke athletes, Kallie and Tyler, became double medalists at the tournament. Tyler won the gold medal in his category in the Patterns event while Kallie won silver in her division's Patterns event as well.

Zane Chopik also won a medal in Patterns. Chopik took home the bronze medal in his division.

Medals weren't the only things handed out in the Turvey Centre.

Four Yorkton athletes also won Black Belt of the Year in their respective age categories.

Shane Varjassy was awarded the Male Adult Black Belt of the Year and handed a $500.00 scholarship cheque.

Clark Bazin was issued a $300.00 scholarship cheque as the winner of the Male Junior Black Belt of the Year while both Zane Chopik and Tyler Buenneke were given $200.00 scholarship cheques as co-winners of the Male Cadet Black Belt of the Year.
