With only one win in three tries this week the Yorkton Terriers are now in a second place tie with Estevan in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Sherwood Conference.

Both teams have 47 points, the Terrier's based on a record of 22-18-1-2.

Weyburn leads the Conference with 61 points, with Melville fourth with 46, followed by Notre Dame with 35 and Kindersley with 22.

The Terriers hit the road Sunday to play Weyburn, where the host Red Wings took a 2-0 lead after 20-minutes on goals by Ryan Whitell and Keegan Bruce, the latter on the powerplay.

Tyler Giebel scored two unanswered goals in the second for the Terriers to tie the game through two periods.

Coltyn Sanderson and Jesse Ross gave the Wings a 4-2 lead in the third, before Giebel completed his natural hat trick to complete the scoring in a 4-3 Terrier loss.

Warren Shymko faced only 18 shots in the Terrier nets.

On Friday, the Melfort Mustangs rolled into Yorkton sporting the worst record in the Itech Conference, but they still climbed back on their bus after a 3-0 win over the host Terriers.

Kale Thomson was in the Terrier nets allowing three goals on 25 shots; the goals coming from Jarrett Zenter, Godric Tham and Brandon Sloan.

The Terriers did manage 37-shots, but Mustang netminder Patrick Johnson turned them all away to earn the shut-out.

Following the home ice loss, Terrier head coach Trent Cassan was not pleased by the effort he saw.

"It's an effort we can't have," he said, adding he wasn't sure what happened.

When asked if it was the team's worst effort of the season, Cassan simply stated, "I don't know if you'd be very far off on that."

Cassan said it was a case where he was "more disappointed than being mad."

The Terrier coach said the organization showed faith in the players not making moves at the trade deadline, and then they came out flat against the team with the worst record in the north.

"It's something as a coaching staff we'll have to address," he said, adding it isn't a situation of losing confidence in the team. In fact he said the Terriers have been very consistent this season.

It was however an ill-timed night off given the opponents.

Asked if the Terriers may have expected too easy a game against the lowly Mustangs, Cassan said "we talked about it pre-game." He said no game is a given win and the Terriers should have been ready for it.

All that said, it was a game Cassan said he hopes the team learns from.

"We preach consistency and when we don't have it we can be a pretty average team," he said.

Wednesday win

The Terriers hosted Weyburn at the Farrell Agencies Arena last Wednesday and came out on top of the Sherwood-leading Wings 4-3.

The teams traded first period goals Jesse Ross for Weyburn, with Jeremy Johnson replying on the powerplay for Yorkton.

Jordon Hoffman scored 1:06 into the second frame on the powerplay, with Ross back for his second 39-seconds later to give the Wings an early 3-1 lead.

Zak Majkowski, and Johnson responded to tie the game before Riley Paterson scored on the powerplay with only eight-seconds left in the period to give Yorkton a 4-3 lead.

The third was scoreless as Warren Shymko completed a 23-shot win in the Terrier nets.
