An afternoon spent on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) can be fun, exhilarating and a great way to experience nature, but if ridden improperly these machines can be dangerous. Just like you should not hunt before learning about gun safety, it is a mistake to explore the trail on an ATV without the proper training.
Vehicle misuse has been identified as a contributing factor in 92 percent of ATV fatalities in Canada, which demonstrates the critical nature of proper training and practice. Even for experienced riders, safety courses offer a chance to re-emphasize the foundations of safe ATV operation.
For would-be ATV riders aged 12 and over, the Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association (SATVA) offers training courses to prepare you for every eventuality. The 4.5-hour training program is operated by the Canada ATV Safety Institute (CASI), and led by certified, licensed instructors. The curriculum includes an explanation of ATV controls, advice on reading terrain and properly manoeuvring your machine in challenging conditions. Everything taught in the course is based on field-tested techniques, and the course is meant to provide a fun, safe and orderly way to become comfortable and gain experience on an ATV.
"It's important to keep in mind that an ATV is not a toy," said SATVA president Vera Connolly. "It's important to remember that an ATV is a powerful machine. When you stop thinking about the risks and the potential dangers involved in ATVing, that's when accidents happen."
The cost to register for ATV safety courses varies depending on a number of factors. The basic cost to register is $125. However, children between the ages of 12 and 15 may attend the course at a reduced rate of $75. SATVA members receive a discount with the cost for them to attend a course being $100. Corporate registrants will be charged $150, and beginning this year a $50 rental fee will be charged for the use of a SATVA ATV during training.
