Ten athletes from Sacred Heart High School attended the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association provincial track and field competition on June 1-2.

The SHSAA meet was hosted by the Saskatoon District at Griffith's Stadium on the University of Saskatoon campus. Approximately 1500 student/athletes participated in the championship, which consisted of nine track events, seven field events and a combined Quadathlon event. The meet included Midget (under 15), Junior (under 16) and Senior (16 and over) competitors. Things started early last Friday morning and continued until early evening on Saturday.

Says coach Rachel Sterzuk: "Sacred Heart had a successful meet and brought homefive medals and a provincial champion banner."

Preston Liebrecht led the way with a gold medal in the 200m inan extremely competitive final.

"His time of 22.43 seconds was the fastest time at the provincial meet in 11 years in this sprint," quotes Sterzuk.

Preston also collected a silver medal in the 100m race with a time of 11.10 seconds. In addition he placed sixth in both high jump andlong jump and finished fifth in the 4 x 400m relay race. Liebrecht was also named the runner up to the aggregate award in the Senior Boys category for the most successful athlete at the meet.

On the girls' side, Brooke Mentanko came home with two medals.

She placed second in the 1500m, third place in the 800m in the senior girls' age category and placed eighth place in the 4 x 400m relay race. "Brooke was very happy overall," says Sterzuk. "She has trained for six days a week for the entire year so of course her ultimate goal was a gold medal. Her competition was very tough.

Rita Fetsch qualified second overall for the junior girls' 80m hurdles but fell on the last hurdle during the semi-finals, reports Sterzuk. That fall ended Fetsch's medal hopes. Fetsch went on to a fourth place finish in the girls 300m race, says Sterzuk.

In the midget boys events, Caleb Sutter won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100m relay race.

Anthony Fetsch placed seventh in the senior boys' pole vault while Emily Kruger rounded out the Saints' performance with a sixth in the senior girls' pole vault.
