Defenceman Mackenzie Flett undid everybody including the Prince Albert goalie to bring Yorkton to within a goal during Pee Wee Tier II hockey tournament action over the weekend at the Farrell Agencies Arena. The Yorkton/Prince Albert game went down to the wire before the Stars finished the job with an empty net goal to win 3-1.

The Yorkton Pee Wee Tier II hockey tournament was held over the weekend.

Host arenas were the Farrell Agencies Arena and the Kinsmen Arena.

All teams were guaranteed four games and games featured one 15-minute period and two 20-minute periods.

Included in the tournament were 12 visiting teams and four local teams. The Prince Albert Sharks, Regina Capitals, Melville Rock, Martensville Marauders, Muenster Flyers, Dauphin Kings, Swift Current Wranglers and Prince Albert Stars. Local representation included the Century 21 Yorkton Terriers, Mark's Work Wearhouse Yorkton Terriers, Premier Cabinets Terriers and the Petro Can Terriers.

Games started on Friday afternoon and concluded Sunday with finals games played at both arenas.

Finals winners included Dauphin beating Muenster 7-6 in the 'A' final.

Yorkton Premier Cabinets beat Martensville 4-3 in overtime in the 'B' final and Melville beat Yorkton Century 21 Terriers 7-3 in the 'C' final.

The tournament received sponsorship from Repsch Agri-Parts and Sales Ltd (Brent Repsch).

"We would like to thank the following sponsors: Repsch Agri-Parts and Sales Ltd., Kawchuk Construction, Toshiba Business Solutions, Park's Jewellry, the Yorkton Junior 'A' Terriers, Hometown Source for Sports, Audio Warehouse, Pizza Hut, Boston Pizza.

And all of the parents of the Yorkton teams for the help in running this tournament this weekend, and the tournament committee," says Kerri Kawchuk, tournament chair, who helped get everything going, along with co-chair Tammy Biblow and committee: Wendy Haberman, Trace Leask, Ken and Jennifer Merkl, Brent Repsch and Mike Thorley.

Among the games played over the weekend was a 3-1 Prince Albert Stars win over the Mark's Work Wearhouse Terriers. Prince Albert took an early 1-0 lead and it stayed that way until near the end of the second period when defenceman Mackenzie Flett tallied on a solo effort to bring Yorkton to within a goal.

"Beautiful," said coach Terry Demchuk when asked about the finesse of that goal, adding that Flett is "capable of that kind of play". Demchuk added that Flett caught something over the weekend and wasn't playing at 100 per cent health.

Demchuk watched as his team mounted a late attack trailing the game 2-1, and Flett let a few shots fly from the point but Prince Albert scored into the empty net for a 3-1 win.

"It was a good ending to the last game," he said but noted that "it's a little disappointing because we (have) played better.

It was a long weekend, he added, and they played a really long game the night before.

Demchuk said it was against the team from Dauphin which he said he'd like to see more of them.

"It was a hard game last night," he said, referring to Dauphin. "It was good, high quality" adding that they were "hanging with them" despite a 9-7 setback.

That game was back and forth all day and came down to the last several minutes before Dauphin pulled away for good.

"We'd like another shot at a team like that."

Demchuk's Terriers rode a 6-0 win over Regina in the tournament's opener back on Friday afternoon. They doubled up the Prince Albert Sharks, 4-2 on Saturday morning before taking their first loss (Saturday night vs Dauphin) and dropped the last game 3-1 to the Stars.

The next hockey tournament scheduled for Yorkton will be the bantam teams. Games start on Friday the 13th at 4p.m., at Kinsmen Arena.
