The U12 Girls of the Yorkton United Football Club captured the gold medal at the Regina FC soccer tournament over the weekend of Dec. 16 – 18. This is the second consecutive tournament that the U12 girls have medalled.

They captured silver in November at the Lakewood Kickstart tournament in Saskatoon. A number of the regular U12 team members were unable to attend, so five U10 girls were called up to help the team. Addisyn Jakubiec, Lacey Westvelt, Sara Switzer, Lily Johnson and Willow Krawetz all helped the U12 girls capture the gold.

The team played three Regina FC clubs on the way to the final. In the first game against FC Tancredi, they came away with a draw, 2-2. Angela Fetsch and Kori Severight scored the goals for Yorkton.

In game two, the girls defeated FC Zadorsky 5-1 on the strength of goals by Lacey Westvelt with a pair, Avery Bond, Kyra Pelly, and Kirsi Kitch with singles.

In game three, YUFC beat FC Lawrence 5-0 with goals coming from Addisyn Jakubiec and Angela Fetsch with two each, and Kyra Pelly with one.

After the round robin, Yorkton was pitted against FC Lawrence once again, this time defeating them 1-0 in a very close match. The winning goal was scored by Lacey Westvelt on a beautiful strike to the top left corner of the net. Jaya Code recorded her second shut out and made a game saving stop with about ten minutes remaining in the game to preserve the victory.

The next action for the U12s will be at the end of January at the annual Winterfest tournament. The girls will be working on positional play both on offense and defense prior to their January tournament. They will look to continue their strong tournament play having only lost one game in two tournaments thus far.
