The 2015 baseball season might long be over, however that hasn’t stopped the Yorkton Yankees from adding yet another prestigious title to their resume.

In addition to three championships, league, playoff and provincial, the senior baseball club - made up predominately of local Yorkton players - was recently named the Senior Baseball Team of the Year at the 2015 Sask Baseball Association/Baseball Canada banquet; an award voted on by members of the Baseball Saskatchewan committee including executive director Mike Ramage. “I knew we had a good year, but there are so many good senior baseball teams throughout the province so you definitely don’t expect it (to win),” said Yankees’ player/assistant manager Mark Jacobs, adding that once he received the nomination forms and spoke to teammates he knew he had to put his team forth for consideration. “I talked to a few of the guys off the team and they all thought it was a good idea (to nominate ourselves) so I went ahead with it.”

Jacobs then said that while the Yankees were the team to ultimately win the award as the Senior Baseball Team of the Year, it’s also a victory for every team in the Southeast Senior Baseball League (SESBL), which had previously been seen as an inferior league by teams and players in Saskatchewan’s largest senior league the QVBL (Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League). “This award gives some recognition to our league and the quality of baseball this area has,” mentioned Jacobs. “There are some strong teams in our league, and winning this proves that.”
