The YCS team members and coaches celebrate their victory after the championship game at MC Knoll School.

The Yorkdale Central School Royals girls’ basketball team took home the gold medal from the Yorkton Elementary School Sports Association City Championships, which were held at MC Knoll School on Thursday, March 2.

The Royals faced the Columbia School, and after a close game won 22-17.

This makes it six years in a row that the Yorkdale Central School girls’ team has won the city championships.

Yorkdale Central School basketball coach Jason Boyda said the Columbia team was “by far the toughest team a Yorkdale team has faced in a YESSA Championship.”

Boyda also said the entire game was a defensive struggle for the Royals.

Some stars on the court who coach Boyda mentioned were Elle Makismow, who provided the lock down man-to-man coverage that was required to slow down Columbia’s excellent shooting guards.

Brooklyn Korol was a force to reckoned with because of her rebounding, as she strongly rebounded both offensively and defensively.

And Johanna Fleger as a grade seven player did an outstanding job of running the Royals’ offense, both in scoring and distributing the ball around to the other YCS playmakers.

This win comes just two weeks after the YCS boys’ basketball team captured the same YESSA city championship title. For the boys, it was their third consecutive win.

The boys team is also coached by Boyda and Edgar.
