The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) and Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) will be jointly hosting the 2nd Annual York City Classic Boys Basketball Tournament this weekend.

The tournament will be the top showcase of 4-A boys basketball in the province as five of the top eight teams in the province will be in attendance.

Games tip off at Sacred Heart and YRHS at 12 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 27).

The YRHS will open against the Martin Monarchs at noon while Sacred Heart plays their first game at 4:50 p.m., against Weyburn.

The tournament continues Friday evening with YRHS battling A.E. Peacock from Moose Jaw at 6:30 p.m., and the Saints playing against the North Battleford Comprehensive Vikings at 8:10 p.m.

Both teams enter play this weekend hoping for good things.

The Saints are coming off a tournament win in Estevan, where they beat the Weyburn Eagles handily in the final, and are looking to continue their solid play in 2012.

The Raiders, a veteran-laden team with seven Gr. 12s, are looking to piece together some wins against the top teams in the province.

The tournament field will include St.Mary and Carlton from Prince Albert, the North Battleford Comprehensive Vikings, Martin Collegiate from Regina, A.E. Peacock and Central Collegiate from Moose Jaw, as well as the Swift Current Colts, Estevan Elecs, Weyburn Eagles, and the Melville Cobras.

St.Mary's Marauders and Central Cyclones are the pre-tournament favourites as they battled in the final of the Moose Jaw Invitational two weekends ago with the Cyclones coming out on top but there are several others who will be in the hunt as well.

The tournament is collecting a gate at the door.

Admission is $5 a day for adults and all the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in honour of a mother of a YRHS player who succumbed to the disease this past summer.

The players and coaches on both teams will be wearing pink T-Shirts in honour of those who have battled the disease.

The tournament final will tip of at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday and could be a preview of the provincial final.

As well, players on both local teams really appreciate the support.
