With no other hockey games going on within the City limits, there was plenty of it going on down on Gladstone Avenue on both Thursday and Friday.

The Good Spirit School Division thought it might be fun to engage in some floor hockey action and by the looks of it, they were right. Six teams of boys, along with six teams of girls went at it hard at Yorkdale Elementary School. The girls' action wrapped up by 5:30 p.m., Friday evening with MC Knoll beating Saltcoats by a 4-3 final score. The boys' teams wrapped up play late in the day on Thursday with MC Knoll winning against the host Yorkdale, said Steve Farquharson, games co-ordinator.

Each year, for two days, the gym at Yorkdale Central is occupied by the Gr. 6 student floor hockey players, he said.
"It's a one-time shot," he said. "It's special."

It gets pretty aggressive too," he added.

The final standings on the boys side had MC Knoll finish in first, second place was Yorkdale (blue), in third was Saltcoats, fourth place went to Yorkdale (yellow), Dr. Brass finished in fifth and Columbia rounded out the final placings in sixth. On Friday in the girls side, MC Knoll placed in first, Saltcoats was the runner up, taking second spot, Yorkdale Central (yellow) took third place while their schoolmates, Yorkdale Central (blue) finished just behind them in fifth, Columbia took fifth spot and Dr. Brass was sixth.

The games were referreed by Farquharson and Morley Maier.

Each of the teams played five games, plus a sixth game if they made it to the finals. The semi finals and finals were two 12-minute halves. There were 24 games played plus playoffs for both boys and girls. Farquharson wishes to thank Jason Boyda and Grant Edgar, all three are teachers at Yorkdale Central.
