The Gallagher Centre played host to an underwater exhibition of finesse and beauty Saturday, March 28, as the Yorkton Aquabatix Synchronized Swimming Club held their annual Water Show at the Yorkton Swimming Pool.
The Water Show provided an opportunity for each and every Aquabatix swimmer – from Aquasquirts and recreational to competitive and Masters – to demonstrate to their family and friends just what they’ve learnt throughout the season. “Every individual that has swam with our club this year did swim a routine here,” offered Yorkton Aquabatix 2014/15 president Heidi Watrych Saturday evening. “There were solos, duets, trios and teams the swam and our Master group, which are adult swimmers some of who were brand new to this sport this year and others who were seasoned athletes from many years back, swam as well.
“Then we ended the show with a finale where every swimmer from the club swam.”
Not only did the event allow each swimmer another chance to perform, it also enabled the competitive swimmers to practice their routines ahead of the 2015 provincial meet in Regina; a meet that Watrych feels the club as a whole will do very well, largely due to their impressive results throughout the season. “We’ve had lots of first places finishes. We’ve had a couple of solos that have come in first,” said Watrych, continuing, “We’ve had a duet that has come in first, we’ve had medals for a solo that came in second in our eight and under category and Jordanna Watrych came in second at the last two meets for her solo.
“Sarah Kohlman and Jordyn Mickle are our 10 and under duet and they placed fourth in the last meet and did very well.”
Watrych mentioned that new swimmers - such as Lee-Anne Toma - have also had podium success throughout the season while the Aquabatix team also put together strong performances so far this year saying: “The very first meet in January in Saskatoon we had a first place finish from Lee-Anne Toma, who is a novice swimmer in her very first year in competitive. Her duet partner and her competed in March and they also came in first there.
“Then our team has come in third at the last two meets and that’s a challenging routine as we have athletes that are first year competitive and athletes that are five years competing so we’ve made the routine to be able to fit everyone into it. We’ve had a lot of success this year and I’m very proud of all of the athletes and the hard work that they’ve done this year.”
The Yorkton Aquabatix Synchronized Swim Club will next compete at provincials in Regina April 11 and 12 before wrapping up the competitive season in May at the four day Canadian Prairie Invitational meet in Saskatoon.
