Yorkton leads Estevan in provincial playoff

The Sherring Gold Pee Wee AA Terriers opened up provincial playdowns Thursday night with an 8-2 win over the Estevan Sherritt Coal Bruins in South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League play. The game saw Yorkton score five goals in the second period.

Neither team was able to score on the power play.

Carson Welke and Kaeden Taphorn scored first-period goals for Yorkton after Josh Skjonsby opened the scoring at 8:35 of the first period.

Yorkton scored three unanswered goals to start off the second period before Estevan's Skjonsby tallied his second for the visitors.

Carson Miller scored twice in that period for Yorkton. Jake Kustra, Derrick Budz and Logan Foster all had one as the teams went to the dressing room with Yorkton out in front by a 7-2 count.

McKenzie Welke capped off the scoring with his team's eighth goal at 6:48 of the third.

He also added two assists. Carson Welke also had two assists. Alec Zawatsky had three, Kaedan Korzcak had two, Kustra had one Foster had two and Tyler Stratechuk rounded out the assist count with one.

The best-of-three series in the South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League now shifts to Estevan for game two on Feb. 28.
