The Yorkton United U14 team knew they were in tough this past Saturday as they travelled to Regina to take on undefeated Unidad Seniors in SPSL U14 action.
And while United were successful in holding league leading scorer Rodrigo Santamaria to just two goals in the match, he had 12 coming into the game, they failed to hold off the rest of the Unidad attack as six other Regina players found the net, including two goals each by Shafie Nur and Dorion Zambuchini, as the host Unidad club topped United U14 10-0.
But while the 10-0 defeat is certainly not the result United were looking for, they can take solace in the fact that they took on the top team in the Province with basically a junior squad due to injuries and prior commitments of senior players. "It was a tough game for us because we basically fielded a team of juniors as a couple of our senior players were out with injuries or had other commitments," offered U14 head coach Mike Jakubiec. "We lost 10-0 but we had a couple really good chances to score. We just had trouble controlling the match and controlling the play."
And while most coaches would fail to see any positives from a 10-0 defeat, Jakubiec felt his team will learn from losing so convincingly to a more experience squad. "It really was a good learning experience for the boys," offered Jakubiec. They got to see what they should be developing and working towards.
Next action
The next games for Yorkton United U14 (0-6-0) will by this weekend as they first host Aurora Diablo (2-3-1) at Parkland Mall Field at 5:00pm Saturday.
Then then welcome Lakewood Atletico (1-4-1) to Parkland Field Mall at 3:00pm on Sunday for a bottom of the table clash. Both games are rematches of the opening weekend of the season when United lost 3-1 to Aurora and 7-4 to Lakewood.
Yorkton United might be boosted by the return of star Jordin Rusnack, who has been nursing an injury since pulling him hamstring against Lakewood in the second game of the season.
