The Yorkton Regional High School cheerleading team is coming off a winning season.

Last year, the team competed in the senior varsity level two division. They competed at three competitions and took home first place at all of them. The final competition was the provincial championship.

On top of winning first in their division, the team also took home the Grand Champion award at provincials. This award is given to the team who received the highest score of the entire day, regardless of age and level. This was the first time Yorkton has received this award.

Jennifer Ingham is the head coach of the YRHS cheerleading team, and has been for the past nine years.

“We had lots of girls graduate last year, so we have lots of new girls on the team [this year],” she said.

“We have a lot of good talent coming out, we have lots of young girls on the team and strong athletes so we’re looking forward to developing those girls from grade nine to grade twelve.”

This year, they’ll be competing as a level one team as opposed to level two, like they have in the past. This will show a slight change in the stunting and gymnastics portions of their routine.

But they’re looking forward to another season of competition excitement.

“Our first competition we’re hoping to go to is in February this year, which is a little earlier than usual,” Ingham said. “We want to try out a new competition.”

Ingham said they usually attend three to four competitions per season, depending on what weekends works best for the team.

The team is currently practicing four times per week.
