The senior Lady Raiders started off their losing in the B final at the Carlton tournament in Prince Albert, with a roster of almost all new players.

The Yorkton Regional High School senior girls’ basketball team played in Prince Albert this past weekend at a tournament hosted by Carlton.

The team lost nine players to graduation last year, and came into this tournament with only two players who have had experience on the senior team, and eight tenth-grade players. “This weekend was definitely a learning experience for us,” said head coach Jessica Schmidt.

The Raiders lost to Carlton by a considerable amount in their first game, which was an very one sided contest. “It gave us a starting point on understanding where we need to improve and insight on what the senior game looks like,” said Schmidt. From there, YRHS played Meath Park in their second game and won 49-31. Amber Tilcox had 18 points and Marley Potzus had 14.

The girls’ confidence and decision making improved considerably, which carried over into their third game - a close contest with Kinistino in which the Raiders fought hard, but came out with a loss in the end. “Overall it was a good weekend of growth and gaining experience,” said Schmidt. The Raiders are off to Swift  Current this weekend, and will face Weyburn on Friday night.
