Thirteen Yorkton swimmers took part in the second annual Saskatoon Goldfins Winter Classic swim meet at the Shaw Centre in Saskatoon recently.
The event was a last chance for some swimmers to qualify for the upcoming Short Course Provincial ‘A’ Meet in Moose Jaw at the end of February.
Two of Yorkton’s swimmers cracked the top five. Nine-year-old Matlyn Bulych finished fourth in the 50m Breaststroke event. Jennifer Haczkewicz finished fourth in the 100m Backstroke event.
Coach Benko says the competition was a little tougher than previous meets with everyone trying to latch onto an ‘A’ or ‘AA’ time.
Haczkewicz only swam two races at the meet, having opted to compete in a basketball tournament during the first two days of the meet.
Jacob Baker made news at the YSSC club level. He took 0.54 seconds off in his 50m Freestyle event to drop below 30 seconds, swimming the race in 29.86seconds. Benko was thrilled with his performance, “once you drop below 30 seconds, you are really cruising!”
Bryant Jones won the Storm Chaser Award for the second meet in a row.
He improved an impressive 7.06 seconds over two races at the meet. Alex Poncelet was second, taking 1.91 seconds off and Ella Kozak was third, taking 1.74 seconds off.
The next meet will be in Moose Jaw at the Provincial ‘A’ Short Course Championships for all of the swimmers that have qualified.
